Healthy Guidelines for Caregivers of LGBTQ Youth
When it comes to life in foster care, each and every youth has individual needs and expectations. Go Out and Learn Life (GOALL), the South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS) state youth advisory board for youth in foster care, is always hard at work finding new ways to help caregivers meet these diverse needs.
As a part of their continued efforts to actively advocate for youth in care, GOALL members, who are all youth with foster care experience, have collaborated in the creation of a list of guidelines for caregivers of youth who identify as LGBTQ: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning their sexuality and/or gender identity.
These Healthy Guidelines were created by youth with their specific needs in mind to invite respectful, positive communication and to give caregivers clear expectations regarding the care they provide to LGBTQ youth.
Whether or not you are a caregiver of an LGBTQ youth, check out GOALL’s guidelines by clicking here! In the words of one GOALL member, “Love and respect have no gender or preference. We are all equal.”
